Our First gathering
The Baltimore Emergent Cohort will gather--for the very first time--Tuesday night (tomorrow) at 7pm at Champps Restaurant & Bar at the Mall in Columbia. Apologies to all the non-sports fans. My hope is that on a Tuesday night they will have plenty of space for us and then we can find an alternative meeting spot next month. Champps is next to P.F. Changs and near L.L. Bean. I'm curious that you use the name "cohort" to describe your group. The word "cohort" was coined to describe "One of the 10 divisions of a Roman legion, consisting of 300 to 600 men" (from dictionary.com). Wasn't it the Romans that crucified your Christ? Wasn't it a Roman legionnaire and member of a cohort that pierced the Christ's side with a spear? If you look at the usage notes from dictionary.com for the word "cohort" you'll see that the word does indeed carry a negative connotation, most often used by someone critical of a group rather than supportive of it. I'm just saying...

last night was excellent (despite the table shape..) Thanks for putting it together.
i enjoyed the gathering very much. several made me think of things in a new way, and i always appreciate that. i'll be in seattle next month, but if you'd like to meet at my home in columbia the month after, it might be more conducive to conversation. we could grill on the deck if you want. y'all can decide at next month's gathering and let me know.

jason's quite right. 'cohort' has become a common label for study groups and other groups that develop a close, common bound, sometimes around a common interest or task -- whether or not the online dictionary's have picked up on that yet.
